About San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a municipality and coastal town on the Pacific Ocean, in the Rivas department in south-west Nicaragua. San Juan del Sur is popular among surfers and is a vacation spot for many Nicaraguan families and foreign tourists.

Its population is approximately 18,500, consisting largely of families engaged in fishing and foreigners from the United States, Canada and Europe.

While the local economy was, for many years, based on fishing and shipping, it has shifted towards tourism in the last 20 years.

About León

León is a department (state) in northwestern Nicaragua (5,138 km2). It is also the second largest city in Nicaragua, after Managua. It was founded by the Spaniards as León Santiago de los Caballeros and rivals Granada, Nicaragua, in the number of historic Spanish colonial churches, secular buildings, and private residences. As of 2007, the city had an estimated population of 191,076 which increases sharply during university season with many students coming from other regions of Nicaragua. It is the capital and municipality of León department.

About the capital of Managua

Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua as well as the department and municipality by the same name. It is the largest city in Nicaragua in terms of population and geographic size. Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Xolotlán or Lake Managua, the city was declared the national capital in 1852. Prior to its inception as the capital city, the title had alternated between the cities of León and Granada. The city has a population of about 2,200,000, composed predominantly of mestizos.

About Granada

Granada is a city in western Nicaragua and the capital of the Granada Department. With an estimated population of 117,569 (2007) it is Nicaragua's fifth most populous city. Granada is historically one of Nicaragua's most important cities, economically and politically. It has a rich colonial heritage, seen in its architecture and structure.

Granada was founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, ostensibly the first European city in mainland America. Unlike other cities that claim the same distinction, the city of Granada was not only the settlement of the conquest, but also a city registered in official records of the Crown of Aragon, and the Kingdom of Castile in Spain.

Optimism and Hope in Nicaragua

With the exception of my first trip to Nicaragua to pick coffee in 1987, the Aug. 27-Sept. 5, 2012, delegation which Nicaragua Network/Alliance for Global Justice co-sponsored with SOA Watch, had the greatest impact on me.

Of course, the highlight of the delegation was the meeting on our final night with President Daniel Ortega at the home of Fr. Miguel D’Escoto.

Etablering af virksomhed i Nicaragua

Nicaragua har ikke restriktioner for ind- og udførsel af udenlandsk kapital. Udenlandske virksomheder, der arbejder i Nicaragua, har frihed til at flytte kapital uden restriktioner. Det er tilladt for udlændinge at eje ejendom, og der eksisterer ikke nogen former for særregler eller love for udenlandske investorer. Der findes forskellige incitamenter til at gøre forretninger i forskellige sektorer. De vigtigste incitamenter findes i turistsekoren, eksportsektorene, energisektoren samt i "Zonas Francas" (toldfrie produktionszoner).

Nicaragua blev medlem af GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tarrifs) i 1950, og har siden haft et åbent marked.

Markedsperspektiver

Efterfølgende er en række subregionale aftaler med de øvrige centralamerikanske lande kommet til, hvilket har resulteret i en reduktion af toldtarifferne. Frihandelsaftalen CAFTA mellem USA og CentralAmerika samt Den Domikanske Republik trådte i kraft i januar 2006. En EU’s associeringsaftale mellem Centralamerika og EU forventes snart at træde I kraft.
